Mission: Insurrection [Fleet Plot]

=*= BEGIN LOG =*=

Nikkos Tyris frowned as he watched the video monitor in the small, seedy bar he was seated in. The news story on right now showed a warship that Nikkos recognized as the Vesuvius. The feed began with the Vesuvius firing at another vessel in a seemingly unprovoked display of aggression before launching swarms of fighters.

Though he certainly couldn't prove it at this point, Nikkos knew damned well there was something left out from that story.

"Unprovoked attack from a renegade Starfleet vessel..." The reporter was saying.

The propaganda was getting worse. The new government couldn't hope to win with military superiority, certainly not yet. They had to use manipulation and politics to gain victory over the "renegades".

"Showing just how great a threat these insurgents can be to the sovereignty of the Federation..."

Nikkos cast another glance around the bar. Staying hidden had not been overly difficult so far, as the government seemed to believe that he had escaped with either Sharpe or Towers and Taylor. He didn't see fit to correct their mistake, but his activities would not go unnoticed for long.
And he wasn't pushing his luck either. Drawing the hood of the cloak he wore more securely about his face, he looked back up to the monitor.

"Stand for the principles of the Federation. Do not join these rebels in their violent quest to wrest power from the legitimate leaders..."

Nikkos felt torn between nausea and amusement at that statement. The propaganda phrases being spun were just... revolting. It was happening everywhere. The Starfleet traitors had left the Federation unprotected and unpoliced as they threw their oaths to the wind and ran from their oaths and cowered in Klingon space. The new government was pushing this angle hard to recruit new people to their cause.

Uninformed, untrained soldiers given a cause were some of the most dangerous ones. They would do anything they were told in the name of that cause. Counter-law was the name of the game, with laws and rights being brushed aside in the name of the greater good, in the name of protecting the citizens of the Federation from the "Starfleet traitors".

Mugshots now flashed on the screen. Admiral Malone, General Taylor.... Nikkos' own face, Colonel Towers... and others.

"These men are the ones who threaten your safety and that of your family..."

Nikkos resisted the urge to laugh. It wasn't really funny, but the lengths the government was going to in their mission to make the "ringleaders" of the revolt look like serial killers was laughable.

Sharpe had advised Nikkos to seek out Refelian, the IA director, but either the man was underground and out of touch, captured, dead, or just not interested in speaking to Nikkos anymore. He had not been able to find information on the man's fate, and so had stopped trying.

Nikkos' effectiveness so far had been limited anyway. Despite the fact that nobody appeared to be actively looking for him on Earth, teams were still sweeping the streets looking for fugitives or troublemakers. Martial law seemed to be in effect as the new government hunted down the escapees from their purge. Xenophobia was also creeping up again, very quickly. Replacements for ousted Starfleet staff and flag officers were all humans due to some nasty new legislation.

Nikkos knew that kind of anti-alien sentiment would only spread and grow, like an infection. The new government's comfort with using propaganda would help that fact.

"Hey! You!" A voice called from across the bar.

Nikkos had well trained reflexes from countless undercover operations. He didn't even flinch or turn his head. To do so before being sure that the voice was calling to him would invite suspicion onto himself.

The actual target of the voice did not have the good sense to stay calm. He upended his table and ran, throwing down two people in his way.
Watching carefully, Nikkos saw four armed UFP Security officers take off after their charge, weapons drawn.

Before he had even gotten to the door, the officers had opened fire, scattering shots. An Andorian stood up to protest or try and get out of the line of fire and took a shot to the chest. These were not stun bolts either. Whatever the fleeing man had done, UFP Security clearly didn't care if they killed him.

Others were shoved down as the four officers made a mad rush to chase their target who had made it out the back door.

Quietly rising to his feet, Nikkos moved off after them calmly.
