[FNS Special Broadcast]
“What a beautiful day it is here in London, on Earth. Welcome everyone to the federation News Service special broadcast of the Romulan Praetor’s visit. For those of you watching in holodecks across the Federation we will have amazing in-crowd access for your viewing pleasure.” The young Trill hosting the program smiled as two others joined her at a desk overlooking the Thames “I am your host Elan Gol. With me today is Federation Ambassador to Romulus Lanril Po and Federation Councillor Amon Vilbus of Cestus III. They will help to analyze and offer their perspectives.”
“It’s good to be here with you and Councillor Vilbus.” The Trill Ambassador nodded his head at the host and the Councillor.
“Likewise.” Vilbus smiled at the screen.
“The Romulan ships are just now entering London and should be landing shortly. While we wait for their arrival what is it you gentleman expect from these proceedings? Ambassador I will offer you this question first.”
“Thank you Elan. It’s really hard to say. The Star Empire has faced a great deal of pressure recently from Klingon incursions. Certainly the topic of the Klingons will come up during the discussions but there are also issues regarding trade and continued cooperation. A lot of the agreements signed with the former President were voided after the civil conflict ended so there is a lot to discuss. Since they haven’t publicly announced an agenda I guess anything is possible.”
“Councillor Vilbus, your thoughts?”
“I agree with the Ambassador about the Klingons- but honestly I think that will be the topic of focus. From the intelligence reports I have read the Klingons are battering them. They’ve lost hundreds of light-years of space over the past month alone- half a dozen planets are now effectively under Klingon control. I think the Klingon topic will have to dominate the meeting.”
“Do you think they will ask the Federation for assistance with the Klingons Councillor?”
“They may but what can we do? There is little we can offer them and if the President tries to bring anything up with the council he will face fierce backlash. No one wants to upset the Klingons right now.”
“What do you think Ambassador?”
“He may be right.”
“You know I’m right Po. Haven’t you had discussions about that very matter with the Praetor herself?”
“You know I can’t talk about such-”
“I’m sorry gentleman.” Elan interrupted “but the Praetor is now arriving.”
The view panned out over London allowing the perfect angle from which to watch the Romulan ships slowly glide over the Thames. The metallic emerald wings glinted under the sunlight as the ships carefully found their way onto the landing spots setup just in front of the convention center.
“Ambassador since you are familiar with the Romulan establishment can you tell us about the Romulan participants?”
“Yes, I can.”
The doors to the crafts opened and several people began to file out. “The Praetor is wearing the violet robe- technically in Romulan terms her title is that of ‘chief praetor’ as she heads the entire governing council of the Star Empire. There are dozens of Praetors that encompass it. She is part of the AAnikh coalition- a more progression faction within the Star Empire though recently she had faced a lot of opposition from hawks within the government. Especially with the burgeoning Klingon crisis.”
“And the woman next to her is…Shiarrael t’Rehu, am I correct?”
“Yes, you are. Interesting story. Shiarrael t’Rehu was once exiled from the Empire for treason and served as a Captain in Starfleet for a short period of time…it was quite a scandal back then. Currently she is Lieutenant to the current Imperial Navy Commander Takaram tr’Thrai who is the elderly officer moving ahead of the Praetor.”
“Interesting. Thank you Ambassador. It appears the Praetor is approaching President Sa’vak and High Commissioner Enor. We can’t seem to get an audio uplink of what they are saying- our producers are trying to fix that but so far things seems cordial.”
“Well,” Vilbas inserted “this is all show. The fighting starts once they lock themselves in a room and actually start going over the issues.”
“It seems a lot of colleagues are in attendance today Councillor?”
“Yes, meeting important figures from other governments offers the unique opportunity for insight even for meager councilors.”
“Ambassador what do you-”
A flash of light interrupted the transmission as the FNS’s rotating logo suddenly appeared on screens across the Federation. When the transmission resumed it was no longer set in London but a studio where a disheveled announcer made his way behind a glass desk “sorry for the interruption of the broadcast but there has been an incident in London. We’re not sure of the specifics but our producers here in San Francisco are trying to get an uplink…” He paused and spoke off screen “we have a live shot of London?” He turned his attention back to the screen “our connections to our holocameras in London are returning and it seems…” He voice trailed off as a visual box behind him showed a tall column of smoke rising into the London skyline. Murmurs and whispers could be heard in the background as a large explosion suddenly rippled through the convention center causing it to sway and then collapse into a plume of dust and smoke.
“As you can see there has been a serious incident in London. We are attempting to contact all of our team members on scene…wait I am just receiving word that the Earth government has declared a state of emergency and is suspending all non-official transporter activity within a two-hundred kilometer radius of London.”
Suddenly an Andorian walked into view “sorry to interrupt you Ian but we have some new information from one of our reporters on the ground. There was a large explosion in the convention center though we have been informed that the President and Praetor had yet to enter when it occurred. Unfortunately we do not know their status. About four minutes later a much larger explosion occurred and the entire complex has collapsed. It is complete chaos down there right now. Emergency teams are beaming in as we speak and we are trying our best to get in contact with more of our reporters. I can also tell you that Starfleet has issued a level one alert. There is fear about how the Romulans will react to what has just happened.”
