Mission: The Gathering Storm
Innovindil charged onto the small bridge of the Pegasus and stepped straight towards her chair. Sitting down, she took note of the arrangement of stations and consoles. A recent redesign effort of the standard Nova class bridge layout, Pegasus had a sleek design that was unique. Similar to the Intrepid class, there was a bench that housed the chairs for the Commanding and Executive Officers, as well as seating for two guests on either side. Helm was located between the Captain's chair and the view-screen, while Operations was directly to the left and Security and Tactical were to the right. The back of the bridge contained a large M.S.D. of the ship, with three additional stations to either side. Directly behind the command chairs was an auxiliary station. The ship was designed for effectiveness in any role that Starfleet could assign her, and Innovindil nodded in silent approval of the design before she focused on the matter at hand.
"Report!" she said as she sat down.
"Starfleet Command just went offline, but before that the entire compound went on high alert," the Officer of the Watch reported as she took the auxiliary station.
Innovindil's eyes narrowed at the report, which in itself was meant only one thing: That Starfleet Command was under attack. Thinking quickly, she activated the command console and glanced at the readouts before she issued any orders.
"Raise shields and charge the phasers," she ordered. Though officially a science vessel, the Pegasus had been designed as a deep space explorer and a frigate. She couldn't stand on her own against a warship for long, but she had defenses and she had the most advanced phaser arrays Starfleet had available.
"Captain, we're receiving an encrypted transmission from Starfleet Command, audio only," Lieutenant Moss reported. Innovindil nodded for him to play the transmission. It took the computer several seconds to decode the encryption before the message played.
"To all Federation starships within range of this transmission, this is Admiral Malone. Starfleet is falling victim to a Coup`et`tat on Earth, and will soon be replaced by forces opposed to the ideals of the Federation and Starfleet. I call upon all Captains' to stand fast and loyal to your oaths of loyalty to the Federation you serve, and to Starfleet Command. I will soon be ousted from my legitimate office, and replaced by another who will call upon you for service under the uniform code. I urge you to resist. I urge you to either rally under my flag, or take your ship into deep space, and stay there until further instructed. Confirmation code will be 'Excalibur Two Six Four Delta'. If orders do not contain that code, disregard all orders from Starfleet Command."
"Starfleet Command has fallen. I say again, Starfleet Command has fallen. Good luck to you all and God Bless. Malone out."
Innovindil heard gasps from several of the bridge crew, and she turned to see Commander McKeon's reaction. He sat in his seat with a shocked expression on his face. Closing her eyes, Innovindil forced a deep breath and opened them again.
"Helmsman, prepare to break orbit. Set a course for the Phendrana Drift, warp nine," Innovindil said. The Phendrana Drift was a medium sized nebula just outside the Federation's borders, and close to a neutral world that would, hopefully, avoid the conflict that she knew was coming.
"Captain, the U.S.S. Ticonderoga is being attacked," Moss' voice interrupted. Without being told, he put the image on the view-screen.
Innovindil watched as a warning shot was fired. She knew that the Ticonderoga was Admiral Malone's personal flagship.
"Break orbit, lock weapons on the lead ship and send a transmission for them to stand down or be fired upon," Innovindil snapped.
The Security/Tactical Chief gave Innovindil a worried expression, but did as he was ordered. An alarm called his attention for a moment before he reported. "Four other ships are joining us, Captain," he said. After a moment, he frowned. "Captain, the Ticonderoga is sending us coordinates."
"Send them to the Conn," Innovindil said. "Helmsman, plot a course to those coordinates and prepare to go to warp."
"Aye, Captain," the Chief Petty Officer at the helm replied. The Pegasus took station alongside the Ticonderoga seconds before the flagship and her escorts jumped to warp. Innovindil released the breath she had been holding.
"Get me the Ticonderoga and inform Admiral Malone that I would like to speak to him," Innovindil said as she stood. "I'll be in my Ready Room."
